About This Newsletter

This newsletter is intended as a first step toward better communication. It emerges from the efforts of a small group of geographers to establish a network for sharing their mutual interest in tourism. As part of the International Geographical Congress held in the United States in 1992, a symposium took place in Colorado, at which it was decided to ask the International Geographical Union to establish a Study Group on Sustainable Tourism: Development and Protection of Cultural and Natural Heritage. The discussions of the group that met in Colorado, and the work that has taken place since then, have led to a flurry of interest in broadening the network of tourism geographers. This newsletter is an attempt to keep that interest alive. If it achieves that objective, I will put together a second newsletter a few months later.

Three things are needed to make a newsletter successful. First, there must be people interested in reading it; secondly, there must be news worth reading; and thirdly, there must be a way to print and distribute it. I have a list of over 500 names and addresses of potential readers who have at some time in the past shown interest in tourism. They are in about fifty countries of the world. I also have a limited amount of news that has reached me from one source or another, but I need a constant flow of more news and more information from the readers, especially from outside Canada. That is a plea for help. The printing and distribution of this first issue are being generously handled by Dr. Allan Williams of the Tourism Research Group at the University of Exeter. His willingness to assist in this way is greatly appreciated. Although the mailing is being done from his university in Exeter, all correspondence should be send to the Editor, whose address is at the top of this page.

The newsletter needs a name. TOURISTinfo is the only idea for a name that I could think of. Please send me your suggestions.

S'il y a quelqu'un qui pourrait traduire ce bulletin en fran‡ais, l'autre langue officielle de l'U.G.I., veuillez ‚crire au r‚dacteur.

The I.G.U. Study Group

Dr. Michael Hall of Canberra, Australia put together in 1992 the first draft of a thorough and well-written proposal which will be considered by the Executive of the International Geographical Union at its meeting in August, 1994. In the meantime, it has been modified, amended, and partly re-written with the help of several other geographers. There is some indication that it will be received favourably and that the I.G.U. will establish a Study Group on Sustainable Tourism: Development and Protection of Cultural and Natural Heritage. The proposed membership of the Group is as follows:
Frederick M. Helleiner, Canada (Chairperson)
F. Adejuwon, Nigeria
T. Flognfeldt, Jr., Norway
E. Gormsen, Germany
M. Hall, Australia
F. Julg, Austria
S. Liszewski, Poland
Z. Pepeonik, Croatia
T. Singh, India
V. Smith, United States
Y. Vedenin, Russia.
In addition, everyone else on the mailing list will be considered a corresponding member and will be kept fully informed of the activities of the Study Group.

As an example, everyone received a notice of the Seminar on Tourism Geography taking place in Lillehammer, Norway this year, which was determined by the founders of the Study Group as a suitable way of getting the group to begin its work, even before it received formal recognition. (See details elsewhere in this newsletter.)

Professor Jorg Maier has also offered to conduct an excursion through West Bohemia for interested members of the Study Group who will be attending the I.G.U. Regional Conference in Prague in August At that Conference, it is expected that the Study Group will receive formal acceptance into the I.G.U.

This report on the KULU VALLEY in Himachal Pradesh presents the state of the arts in tourism development in Himalayas's most fascinating pastoral Valley, rich in ecological assets, and cultural heritage. This piece of biosphere remained almost a closed ecosystem until recently when mechanised transport brought tourism in its wake, overwhelming the bucolic Manali with tourists straining capacity in various environments, besides posing psychological problems in the host community.
Ably documented and profusely illustrated with maps sketches and colour photographs this monograph from India's leading tourism scientist attains new heights in assessing tourism impact on the host environment in the realms of Ecology, Economy, Society and Culture.
