RE: TOURISM AND LEISURE AT THE INTERNATIONAL GEOGRAPHICAL UNION (IGU), GLASGOW,
SCOTLAND 2004.
Many thanks to all of you who submitted abstracts for potential paper contributions to the sessions being organised by the IGU Study Group on Tourism, Leisure and Global Change and the Geography of Leisure and Tourism Research Group to take place at the main congress in Glasgow (15-20 August) and the pre-congress meeting at Drymen, Loch Lomond (13-15 August). Both events have been met with unprecedented demand for paper offerings and attendance. During the pre-congress meeting three sessions will be operating simultaneously in order to accommodate the papers that were able to be included. Unfortunately, the demand for offering presentations was such that neither more space or time could be secured at the meeting venue. However, some papers that could not be accommodated at the pre-congress meeting were able to be included in the main congress, or if we were not able to include a paper at the pre-congress we have attempted to ensure that a paper could be presented in the main congress. Currently, we expect there to be around 50 papers presented at the pre-congress meeting, while well over 100 abstracts have been offered for presentation at the main congress. Therefore, we are probably looking at the biggest ever tourism and leisure geographies gathering!
Clearly, we are extremely pleased at the very high level of interest in these events, and we have been able to compile full programmes for both events. Please note that even if you are not presenting a paper you are welcome to attend both events. Themes to be explored at the Loch Lomond meeting include:
… Tourism, Migration and
Mobility
… Tourism and Network Societies
… Tourism, Neoliberalism and Public Policy
… Tourism and the Non-place Realm
… Tourism, Geopolitics, and Post-colonialism
… Tourism, Leisure, Culture and Identity
… Tourism, Leisure and Citizenship
… Experiences, Emotions and Performances of Tourism
At the main congress themes include
… The Future of Tourism and Leisure in Geography
… Tourism, Globalisation and Localisation.
… Tourism, Leisure and Economic Restructuring
… Tourism, Leisure and Social Change
… Gender Issues in Tourism and Leisure
… Tourism, Leisure and Sustainability.
… Tourism, Leisure and the Physical Landscape
… Tourism, Leisure and Environmental Management
… Tourism, Leisure and Environmental Action
… Tourism, Leisure and Less Developed Countries
… Tourism, Leisure and Gender
Due to the level of interest, it has taken a little longer than normal to
communicate with authors and potential attendees. We believe we have now contacted
everyone who offered a paper.
If you have not heard from us about your paper(s), would you please be so
kind as to send us an email and we will reply as soon as possible with your
status.
For those of you who have heard from us, could we please take this opportunity, once more, to impress upon you the importance of registering and booking your accommodation for pre-congress meeting? If you have lost your registration or booking form please contact:

Submission of
Abstracts
Abstracts for both
the main congress and the pre-congress retreat should be sent directly to
one or both of the conference organisers (Prof. Michael Hall and Dr Tim Coles)
at the addresses below. Do NOT send your abstracts to the main conference
organisers. We are asked to send details
of our completed paper sessions to them.
For potential presentations at both the pre-congress meeting and the main congress, we require an
abstract of no more than 200 words. Please indicate:
·
your
name and those of any co-authors;
·
your
institutional or other affiliation(s);
·
your
contact details (email, fax, and (mobile) telephone numbers);
·
the
theme your paper is intended to address; and
·
whether
the paper is intended for the pre-meeting
or the main congress.
We have limited space
in the programmes for both the pre-congress meeting and the main congress. Please note:
·
It
may be possible to present a paper at the pre-congress meeting and also at
the main congress (not the same one!), but please indicate your priority.
·
The
timetable, especially for the pre-congress meeting, will be developed on a
first-come, first-served basis subject to the appropriateness and quality
of the submissions.
·
We
expect to inform you within one month of the acceptance of your abstract.
Please submit abstracts for
both the pre-congress meeting and the main congress to us by Thursday 15 January
2004.
Registration
Meeting Makers, the central organisers of the IGU, are responsible for organisation of, and registration for, the Main Congress. Although we compile the academic programme, they organise the main event. They advise all prospective participants to examine their IGU web site (http://www.meetingmakers.co.uk/igc-uk2004/) and that the deadline for early registration is 21 March 2004.
PRE-CONGRESS REGISTRATION

on request, a drop-off in Glasgow.
The costs of travel to, and accommodation at, the pre-congress
meeting are not included in the registration fee, nor are the costs and fees
of the main congress. We are NOT planning
to support PowerPoint.
On Saturday Evening we will be holding a BBQ on one of Loch
Lomond's islands. The cost of this
gathering is provisionally £20 and needs to be booked separately.
A cancellation fee
of 25% will be levied on all cancelled registrations to the pre-congress meeting
before 1 June 2004. No refunds will
be granted thereafter. Costs for the

We have block-booked a number of rooms at the hotel for the
evenings of 12th, 13th and 14th August 2004.
On a bed and breakfast basis, the hotel is quoting:
·
Single
Rooms per person per night £54.00
·
Double
room for single occupancy per person per night £69.00
·
Double
(twin) room per person per night (two occupants) £39.00
·
Triple

The block-booked rooms will be held until 30th June 2004.
Please quote the 'IGU Tourism and Leisure Meeting' when booking your
accommodation. After this date, they will be released to the
general public.
Book directly with the hotel, not us (tel. +44-1360-660245,
fax +44-1360-660267). They will require
a deposit of £20ppn for the room; if you cancel within 4 weeks of the meeting,
this deposit will be held unless the room is resold. If you wish to arrange
your own accommodation, there are plenty of alternatives closeby. But, whatever you do, book early! Loch Lomond
gets busy at the height of summer. The
longer you leave it, the harder it will be to get a place, and a reasonably-priced
one at that!!! Other accommodation
may be found through Loch Lomond.Net (www.loch-lomond.net/).
For further details about how to enter your abstract and about
registration, please do not hesitate to contact us. We look forward to meeting you in Scotland next
summer.
