- I have been involved in tourism in Asia since the early 1980s, initially as a tour leader and travel writer. I completed my MSc dissertation on wildlife tourism in Indonesia in 1987 (University of Surrey). I then worked as a tourism consultant and tour organiser for several years (for Indonesia and other parts of SE ASia), and continued to write on tourism in Asia. My first academic publication was in the 1993 book edited by Hitchcock, King and Parnwell on "Tourism in South East Asia" (published by Routledge). My PhD thesis (2003) was on tourism, conservation and development in Indonesia, with a case study of Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park (University of Hull). I now research various aspects of tourism in Asia, especially concerning protected areas and local participation, and carry out contract consultancy work.
