The field trip will take participants by bus from Guangzhou to Yangshuo on the new express highway. Total travel time is 7 hours, though there will be several stops on the way and and overnight stay in Hezhou.

The two most significant stops are:

Panglong Gorge, Deqing County, Guangdong Province


Hezhou, Guangxi Province
A mountain town famous for it thick forests and rural ethnic minority groups

8 July 2009 (Wed) - Arrive in Guangzhou; Checkin to hotel; transportation and meals on your own.

9 July 2009 (Thu) - Depart Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou in morning. Night in Hezhou

  • In Deqing, we will visit a Temple at the Riverside, which is devoted to the Pearl River Goddess (photos above).
  • We will visit the historical town of Huangyao in Hezhou (photo below)

10 July 2009 (Fri) - Arrive in Yangshou; all meals and entrance fees included.

A minimum of ten participants is required for this field trip to proceed.

  • Trip Length: 2 days and 1 nights
  • Trip Cost: US$250 per person, double occupancy
    • Cost is based on two persons sharing one room. Conference organizers will help to facilitate room sharing, but cannot guarantee that an appropriate roommate will be found. Please contact Alan Lew (alan.lew@nau.edu) to arrange this. If space is available, a single person may travel alone at additional fee of US$100. Please contact Alan Lew if you wish to consider this.

  • Cost includes: all transportation, all meals starting with lunch on July 9 and ending with dinner on July 10; accommodations; all group entrance fees
  • Payment: US$250 Registration and payment will be due June 1, 2007. Late registration may be possible on s a space-available basis, and will cost and extra US$50 per person.
  • Refund policy: Payments are fully refundable before June 1, 2007. A 75% refund will be given for cancellations made June 2 to 15; a 50% refund will be given for cancellations made June 16 to June 30. No refunds of any amount can be given after June 30, 2007.
