Some information on Wanghong in the Shan State of Myanmar

The map below shows the two sections of the Wa Special Region of the Shan State (also known as "Wa Special Region 2") in Myanmar. Wanghong is in the southern section. A search of the WWW will give you lots of information about the northern Wa Region, but information on Wanghong and the southern region is scarce.

On the map, the Red Triangle is the Golden Triangle where Laos, Myanmar and Thailand meet. The Red Circle inside the triangle is the Myanmar border town of Tachilek (Mae Sai is on the Thai side of the border). We will spend our second night in Tachilek. Although Wanghong is not far from Tachilek, the road is not well developed so it will take some time to get there.

The Green Line on this map is the Mekong River. Laos is to the east of the Mekong River. Thailand is to the south of the dashed line (and the red triangle).

Jinghong, the conference city in China, is the red circle to the east of northern section of the northern Wa Special Region (the upper green area).

The government of Xishuangbanna has been involved in the reintroduction of rice paddy agriculture in Wanghong. The Chinese government has been financing and supporting the Shan State border areas in their efforts to move away from an opium-based economy. This has included providing agricultural technology and educational programs.
