If you have any questions, please contact Dr. Alan A. Lew <Alan . Lew at NAU . EDU> for questions about the new MS degree.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1) When do I need to take the GRE and when/how do I give you the results?

  • For Summer or Fall 2010 admission, you should take the GRE so we can get your scores by mid-February 2010, which is when we start evaluating application. We access your GRE scores online through the NAU Graduate College. You tell the GRE people where to send your scores, which is how they get them.

2) When do I apply to the MS program?

  • Priority applications for Fall 2010 will be evaluated soon after February 15, 2010. This deadline is primarily for students who are applying for Graduate Assistantship funding. We accept applications throughout the year for Fall and Spring admissions. The evaluation of applications received in the Summer can take longer because fewer faculty are around.

3) I have not taken any geography classes, will I have to do make up work for that?

  • The new MS Applied Geospatial Sciences degee does not require previous geography coursework.

4) Could I take a couple of classes over the summer and then be admitted?

  • Yes, but you should see an advisor to make sure that the Summer classes can be applied to your degree.

5) If I am uncertain about pursuing a MS degree, can I begin the GIS Certificate Program and then switch to a MS later?

  • Yes, though you would need to submit a full application for the MS degree. Most of your coursework would probably transfer, though that decision must be approved by your MS advisor and the NAU Graduate College.

6) Do I need to find a professor to advise me before I apply, do I just call them up?

  • Yes, you need an advisor as part of the application packet. Emailing, calling or dropping by during their office hours (if you are in town) would all be fine. Click here for a list of GPR graduate faculty advisors and topics.

7) Do I simply apply for Student loans just as I have in past semesters?

  • You need to ask the NAU Finanacial Aid Office about this. One major difference is that graduate students are not eligible for grants, though they can still apply for loans.
  • The department offers a limited number Graduate Assistantship positions, class grader positions, and tuition scholarships to help fund your studies. Form 4, above, is the application for these department opportunities.
  • Graduate students are eligible for a variety of other sources of financial aid. See also:
