Required Master of Administration Core Courses (15 units)

  • ADM 515 - Principles of Leadership (3)
  • ADM 540 - Principles of Administration (3)
  • POS 543 - Organizational Management (3)
  • ADM 599/526 - Advanced Professional Writing (3) (or advisor approved elective; this is a new course starting Fall 2009, and will be required starting Fall 2010)
  • Choice of one of the courses below or an approved Research Methods, Statistics or Evaluation course approved by your advisor
    • ADM 530 - Principles and Strategies of Program Evaluation (3)
    • POS 501 - Research Methods and Analysis (3)
    • Community Planning Students may substitute PL 506 for this requirement, with advisor approval.

Master of Adminstration Emphasis in Community Planning (18 units)

  • PL 501 – Communities and Public Planning (3)
  • PL 506 – Planning Analysis and Presentations (3)
  • PL 532 – GIS for Planners (3) - (computer knowledge and skills are a prerequisite for this course)

  • Nine Units selected from the following:
    • PL 401 – Planning Permitting and Review (2) (required for students with no professional planning experience)
    • PL 521 – Planning Law and Ethics (3) (required for students with no professional planning experience; new course starting Spring 2010)
    • PL 545 – Community Planning and Public Health (3)
    • PL 599/514 – Sustainable Community Planning (3) (new course starting Spring 2010)
    • PL 608 - Fieldwork Experience (1-12) (internship; only for students with no professional planning experience)
    • PRM 423 – Recreation Facilities Planning (3)
    • CM 690 – Construction Contract Administration (3)

Capstone Experience (3 semester units) - This is an internship or a defined project related to Community Planning. Completion and approval of the Capstone Application must be done the semester prior to enrolling in the Capstone. Students with a limited professional planning background will be required to do an internship for their capstone.

The Community Planning Capstone follows this Syllabus (pdf).


Master of Administration Scholarship - for students who have completed at least 6 course units.
